Birding In North Bengal Sikkim


The himalayan region of northern west bengla has received th attention of the bird watcher in past few years diversifting into Sikkim. Birding In Darjeeling Tiger Hill

As other hill station Dargeeling is also growing as a great Summer Tourist destination for Indian and Foreginer Guest. Dargeeling nestled at the Northern part of West Bengal in grandeur and beauty of towering snow-capped mountains with the Abode, the Kanchenjunga, the king of the mountains, dominating the sombre, snowy sentinels, lies the jewel of the town, elegant, sophisticated and incrediably beautiful, Where as Tiger Hill is the famed sunrise point 11kms from Darjeeling with the elevation of 2485m giving the clear spectacular views of the Kanchenjunga range. The habitat here is mainly ringal bamboo and oak. It is a good place to see Brown Parrotbill and Gould's Shortwing. One can say this place as "A site with great birding potential." Minimum 5 - 6 days birding at this place is recommended from April to Mid October.

At Dargeeling, one can have sight of Himalayan Griffon, great Barbet, Long tailed Minivet, streaked Laughingthrush, Silver eared Mesia, Black eared Shrike Babbler, Rusty Fronted Barwing, Red tailed Minla, Whishkered Yuhina, Rufous winged Fukvetta, Rufous Sibia, Little Pied, Verditer and Grey headed Flycatcher, Rufous bellied Niltava, Wite throated Fantail, Brownish Flanked and Russet Bush Warblers, Hill Prinia, Smoky, Buff barred, lemon rumped, Ashy throated, Grey Bushcat, Chestnut bellied Rock Thrush, Blue Whistling Thrush, Grey Winged Blackbird, Green backed and Black throated tits, White tailed Nuthatch, Olive backed pipit, Mrs gould's, Green tailed and Fire tailed Sunbirds, Yellow breasted Greenfinch, little Bunting and many more .....

At Tiger Hill, Birders can have a look at Hill partridge, Khalij Pheasent, Large Hawk Cuckoos, Oriental and Lesser Cuckoo, Oriental and Lesser Cuckoos, Spot bellied Eagle Owl, Collard Owlet, Himalayan Swiftlet, Fork Tailed and House Swifts, White throated Needletail, Darjeeling Woodpecker, Streak breasted Scimitar Babbler, Scaly breasted Wren Babbler, Rufous Capped Babbler, Fulvous and Grey headed parrotbill, Blue winged laughing thrush, Black heade shrike babblers, Hoary throated Barwing, Snowy browed, Sapphire, and Rufous gorgeted Flycatcher, Rufous bellied Niltava, Yellow bellied Fantail, Chestnut warblers, Goldcrest, indian Blue Robin, Orange flanked, Golden and white browed Bush robin, White tailed Robins, WHite collard Black Bird, Plain backed. Birding In Lava

Located at about 32 kms east of Kalimpong, Lava is a small village surrounded by Hills of North Bengal near Bhutan's western Border is an active Buddhist monastery. People here were really friendly and birding in the forests was also very rewarding along the roads and path. Birding atleast 2 - 3 days is recommended at this small village, inorder to have a look at Steepe Eagles, Mountain Scops owl, fork tailed Swift, Great Hornbill, Golden Barbet, Greater and lesser Yellownapes, Crimson breasted woodpecker, Longtailed Broadbill, Grey backed Shrike, Maroon Oriole, Hill Myna, Grey Treepie, Black winged Cuckooshrike, Short billed Minivet, Orange billed Leafbird, Striated, Himalayan and Mountain Bulbul, rusty cheeked and Coral billed Scimitar Babblers, Long billed Wren Babbler, Golden babblers, White throated Laughingthrush, fire tailed Myzornis, Rufous vented Yuhnia, Nepal Fulvetta, Dark sided, Red throated and White gorgeted Fly Catcher, Yellow browed Large billed Leaf, Black faced warblers, Eurasian, Brown throated and Rusty Flanked Treecreepers, Fire breasted Flowerpecker, Black Throated Sunbird, Streak Spiderhunter, Common Rosefinch, Red Cross and many more....

Birding In Sandakhphu Trek

Situated at the elevation of 3636 m from sea level and about 58 kms from Darjeeling Sandakphu means the 'Height of the Poison Plant' which is a direct reference to the profusion of the poisonous aconite plants that grow near the peak. The loftiest peak of the Singalila Range, Sandakphu is the culminating point of many trekking routes in the Darjeeling-Sikkim region. Trek to Sandakphu starts from Maneybhanjan, a small town near Darjeeling. Sandakphu epitomises the wild elemental grandeur of the snows. Nature here is at her pristine best, and the vista at the top is worth all the hardship endured on the way. Aptly called the Paradise of Trekkers, the Sandakphu peak is a vantage point from where one can see four of the world's five highest peaks - Everest, Kanchenjunga, Makalu and Lhotse in a continuous snow-clad arc. Once can spend 6 - 7 days at this area by enjoying trekking and birdwatching.
